The AATCLC proudly presents "My Voice, My Power," an initiative led by AATCLC member Dr. Monica Wilson to combat vaping among African American youth.

The tobacco industry’s playbook hasn’t changed: the same marketing tactics once used to push menthol cigarettes in Black communities are now being used to hook youth with candy-flavored vapes. Brands like Elf Bar, Lost Mary, and Geek Bar are flooding the market with candy-flavored vapes wrapped up in colorful packaging, making them a popular choice among young people.

Vapes are deadly. These devices release toxic metals such as lead, nickel, and chromium at levels up to 1,000x higher than traditional combustible cigarettes.

What You’ll Learn

  • The latest science on vaping and toxic metal exposure.

  • How the marketing of menthol cigarettes parallels today’s marketing of candy-flavored vapes — both designed to attract and addict the next generation.

  • Advocacy tools to Save Black Lives.

Who Should Attend

African American youth and young adults, parents, caregivers, educators, and advocates who are ready to take a stand for the public’s health and say “No” to the continued predatory marketing of tobacco products to our youth and say “Yes” to the health and welfare of our kids, who are the most vulnerable.

A Luta Continua! (The Fight Continues)!

We’ve seen this before. For decades, the tobacco industry pushed menthol cigarettes into Black communities, hooking generations with targeted marketing and minty flavored products that mask the harsh taste of tobacco. Now, flavored disposable vapes are the new trap—designed to keep our youth addicted while putting their health at risk.
